Chrząszczyżewoszyce 08.1944

This week in our club we played a game with Rapid Fire rules. As I did not used this system for a long time, and Campbell never play it, there was great opportunity to refresh the rules as the same to try my figures and models.

1. Orders/Rozkazy.
Chrząszczyżewoszyce is the birthplace of Grzegorz Brzęczyszczykiewicz a very popular Polish hero of whom I have already mentioned on this blog (click here). Okay, character and locality are fictitious, but the situation described in the scenario is very possible. I placed our game in August 1944, when the great Soviet offensive "Bagration", which led to the breakdown of German Army Group "Center" and the creation of the giant gap in the German defense, due to the  outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising suddenly stopped and gave the Germans a chance to perform a counterattack and push for a time the Soviets off the Vistula and Narev rivers. Our game was played at the time of transit of German troops from the region of Warsaw to Radzymin. Somewhere in the middle of that road I placed Chrząszczyżewoszyce  with a very important crossroads that Germany must keep, as same as the road, which is an important communication line of German troops. The Soviets, of course, have break this line.

2. Ordre de bataille
This is a very important notice, the units listed below, in fact that they were involved in fighting in Poland in August 1944, but their composition has been adapted to our game and is fictitious. Also their composition is strictly fictitious and was only intended to make our game more attractive.

 3. The Game/Gra

The game was started with the race, who as the first will take Chrząszczyżewoszyce. Germany won the race, and they took a defensive position in the village.
Gra została rozpoczęta wyścigiem, kto pierwszy zajmie Chrząszczyżewoszyce. Ten wyscig wygrali Niemcy i oni zajęli pozycje obronne we wsi.

The second part of the Germans took up their positions to defense  the part of the road, most exposed to be taken by Soviets. Soon came to the exchange of fire between the German tanks in the village and the advancing Soviet tanks. Advantage of T34 especially those equipped with  85mm guns proved its superior and soon all the Pz IV were either destroyed or eliminated from further game. Also, the road defending forces were decimated, one of the Panther was destroyed, and the other had to withdraw. It seemed that it will be an easy victory for Soviets...
Szybko tez doszło do wymiany ognia pomiędzy niemieckimi czołgami we wiosce i nadciągającymi czołgami sowieckimi. Przewaga T34 a w szczególności tych wyposażonych w działa 85mm okazała się miażdząca i w krótkim czasie wszystkie Pz IV zostały albo zniszczone, albo wyeliminowane z dalszej rozgrywki.
Despite these successes, Soviet tanks did not decide to enter the village. German infantry already took their positions in the village and Soviet infantry was still too far away to support their tanks. The 1026th Infantry Regiment had the biggest problems, becouse lost its HQ. The cause of this disaster was the company of StuGs. However, those ware quickly eliminated by Soviet tanks (2 StuGs destroyed and StuH had to withdraw). Theoretically, the road to the village was opened...
Teoretycznie droga do wioski została otwarta...
Then arrived the German reinforcements. Defenders of the village was supported by Panthers and SS infantry and  the road defending troops ware supported by 507th Heavy Tank Battalion. The Soviet offensive was halted, however,  they received support too. While forces  storming the village in some way were stopped and armored forces supporting them destroyed, the roads could not be kept and there took place the breaking of German defense. Soviets began surrounding the village.
Wtedy przybyły niemieckie posiłki. Obrońców wioski wsparły piechota SS i Panthery, a obronę drogi wsparł 507 Batalion Czołgów Ciężkich. Ofensywa sowiecka została zatrzymana, jednak i oni otrzymali wsparcie. O ile siły szturmujące wioskę zostały w pewien sposób zatrzymane i siły pancerne je wspomagające zniszczone, to drogi nie udało się utrzymać i tam nastąpiło rozerwanie obrony niemieckiej. Sowieci rozpoczęli okrążanie wioski.

Soviet first assault of the village broke down, however, Germans suffered some losses (they lost their heavy mortar). New tanks, which were to support the attack have been destroyed and this is where Germans achieved some success. On the other hand, in the north Soviets completely defeated the enemy and began bombardment of the German positions. However, for the final assault hasn't enought time. It was the 12th round and the game was over. Soviets won the battle, but only in part. They failed to take the village, but broke the German lines of communication.

It was good to remind these rules on the occasion of such a good game.
And here is the link to my gallery on flickr, where you are able to see the pictures from the game in much better resolution:

No a Sowieci wygrali, bo mieli dobrego dowódcę ;)
