Second Empire. Rebels & Patriots.

Hi! Today two new short reports from games we had during the last two weeks. The first was a test game of new Michael's set for the Franco-Prussian War and is called Second Empire. The other game, played last week was Rebels and Patriots and again I received Indians to play... By the way, we got a new home and soon we will receive keys. Now I busy with packing stuff and prepare to move, so be aware, that this space could be quiet for some time...
Witam! Dziś dwa raporty z naszych gier, rozegranych w ciągu ostatnich dwóch tygodni. Pierwsza z nich to testy nowych zasad Michaela dla wojny francusko pruskiej, zwane Second Empire. Druga to gra z poprzedniego tygodnia z zasadami Rebels and Patriots, gdzie znów dostałem do gry Indian...

French.
Prussians.

Michael started work with this set some times ago and finally decided to introduce us to it. It is an updated version of his previous rules Seven Years War. He changed some rules about actions, added some new to give us a taste of the battlefield of the second half of the 19th century. I on our game French army under my command fought Prussians under Michael's and Mike's command. Both sides were very cautious and most casualties were made by gunfire. At the end of the game, I had my cavalry charges, one against Prussian cavalry and that finished with a good result and one against infantry, that finished very badly. The game finished with a draw. That was the first test and expect more tests soon.
Michael rozpoczął prace nad tymi zasadami jakiś czas temu i w końcu zdecydował się nam je pokazać. Jest to zaktualizowana wersja zasad jego wcześniejszych Seven Years War. Zmianie uległo kilka zasad dotyczących aktywacji, pojawiło się kilka nowych by dać nam odczuć specyfikę pola walki drugiej połowy wieku XIX.

My French: 2 x Line, 1 x Militia (large), 2 x Militia, 1 x Indians (large), 1 x Gun (manhalded)

Campbell's French: 4 x Line, 2 x Marine, 2 x Coeur de Bois, 1 x Gun (with limber)
Alex's British: 5 x Line, 1 x Indians (small), 1 x Rangers, 1 x gun (manhalded)

Michael's British: 1 x Line (large), 3 x Line, 1 x Rangers, 1 x gun (limbered)

This time we had two objectives (two houses on two hills), which we had to take control over more turns than our opponents. I and Campbell played French and Michael and Alex, the British. Finally, the game divided into two clashes, Michael's and mine and Campbell against Alex. In our game after some initial firing I moved my Indians close to the enemy and once again with a massive charge destroy most of the British forces. That helped me to keep an objective for most of the game. Campbell had a much harder task but managed to finally stop British advantage. Finally, it finished with a French victory, mostly because of my Indians (again!). The game was very brutal for officers. Two of them Alex's and Campbell's get badly wounded and Michael's escaped from the field. At the end of the game, only my officer left on the battlefield. It was a great and funny game.
Ja i Campbell dowodziliśmy Francuzami a Alex i Michael, Brytyjczykami.

2. The game. Gra.

Prussian forces a little outnumbered the French, however the French had better defending positions. Because of some changes to the rules the distance between the forces appeared to be the main issue determining the outcome of the game. However lets do the in the correct way.

In the center our troops slowly moved forward, mostly because of the accurate fire from French artillery. Every two inches of the movement forward came with one inch movement back, so the progress was very slowly. Finally Dave, who commanded here, limbered the artillery and moved it to the position, where it could shoot on normal distance, specially that the French were almost out of ammo. Sadly, when he was ready to execute the final push, the game was over, because we had to went home...

On my side of the table, I commanded the Cavalry Corps. First my units get under the fire of large Garry's artillery battery, so I had to withdraw my units into the woods and slowly prepared for my big attack. I also moved my artillery on my flank and when I put it on position, started fire at Garry's guns. I forced them to withdraw and then pushed my Cavalry to a frontal charge. Amazingly, they managed to force French to withdraw and even survived that attack, being almost untouched. Sadly we did not have enough time to see what would happen next here.

On our other flank, Angus pushed slowly his forces against Jack. French managed to outmaneuver the Prussians and broke few of their units. The situation was not good for us over here, but once again the time was over. Finally Prussian did not achieved any of the objectives (the town in the centre and the hill, in front of my troops), so the game finished with French victory.

3. Summary. Podsumowanie.

I found the Bonnie Blue Flag as very realistic set of rules, however they are not fit for the club evening, but rather for a day game. To much calculations had to be done to resolve the fighting. also taking off the D6 throw increasing the movement from the original rules, was not good idea. that slowest the game very much. Anyway the rules are written very well and will try them later, but maybe during the Sunday game and not on Thursday.
Zbyt dużo kalkulacji, by rozstrzygnąć walkę.

Mars-la-Tour 1870

Today, the big game we had on Saturday. Many of our club members have collection for Franco-Prussian war in 10mm. For that purpose Angus hired a Dean Bowling Club again and we had possibility to use above collections. As for me, I am not big fan of that conflict, however if there is possibility of rolling some dice I am always happy to do it. For that game we used the Fire and Furia Francese, an unofficial supplement to the Fire and Fury rules. This time I will not write anything about the rules, as I need to look at them a little closer and maybe I will do it another time.
Dziś duża gra, którą rozegraliśmy w sobotę. Wielu z członków naszego klubu posiada kolekcję do wojny francusko-pruskiej w skali 10mm. Do naszej gry użyliśmy zasad Fire and Furia Francese, nieoficjalnego dodatku do Fire and Fury.

2. The Game. Gra.

I started the game as the commander of the 3rd Reserve Cavalry Division in the village of Vionville, with an artillery strike on my positions (9am of the gaming time). Lucky for me I managed to withdraw all my troops of the village, which soon has been taken by Prussians. All my units moved to St. Marcel, which I decided to defend for any cost. As soon I managed to rally my forces I decided to counterattack. Unfortunately for myself I had Jim's cavalry (5th Cavalry Division) against me, who managed to push me back of the St. Marcel. Lucky for me on my left flank appears Jack's forces (II Corps) especially his guns. Jack decided to attack Jim's positions outside of Vionville but without any luck. In the meantime I failed to rally my forces and all of them flee from the battlefield (around 12pm of the gaming time). As Bill had to leave the game, I took his troops instead (3rd Division) which were somewhere north from Rezonville and slowly moved them towards Vionville. In the meantime the Prussians created a solid frontline (River Juree-north from Flavigny-north from Vionville -River Ravine) and it looks like they will stay at this line to the end of the game as more Prussian forces were arriving on the battlefield. Finally our Reinforcements arrived, the Guard under Gerry. He moved his forces using northern road and attacked with his forces, supported by myself  (I managed to destroy rest of the Prussian 5th Cavalry Division, so the revenge has been taken) Vionville, which has been retaken at 2:30pm of the gaming time. That was the moment when I had to leave. According to the post gaming informations, the French kept the village till the end of the game and that gave us a draw. Anyway it was a great game and nicely spend Saturday.
