Chromy 1920

Our last game in this year at Hugh's was the first try of our Polish-Bolshevik War collection. As I did not started painted it yet (I bought some figures at this year Salute), being busy with other projects, Colin and specially Campbell had enought figures to arrange game for six players. We used the Setting the East Ablaze! rules, the new Back and Beyond. As so far I was quite happy with this set, now I'm not so enthusiastic to them. I'll try to explain it at the end of the relation.
Użyliśmy zasad Setting the East Ablaze!, nowszej wersji Back and Beyond.

2. The game/Gra.

Polish troops started their assault on the village in three columns. Unfortunately for them, their movement was very slow. It was so slow, that some of the units for the whole game did not managed to even reach the opponents. The Polish train was the first, who get in contact with the Bolsheviks, but its fire was very inaccurate...

Then arrived the Polish cavalry. As they have to assault the buildings, have to dismount, and on foot attack the Bolshevik positions. The Polish High Command (I...) gave the rash order to get the buildings in melee, but Bolsheviks positions were to strong, and this attack failed. Everything started to look like it will be very hard day for Poles...

And it was, but harder then I thought. First from our back, the Red Cavalry attacked our Infantry. Poles lost two Blue Army Platoons because of thei sabres. Then Bolshevik plane attacked first Polish cavalry, and then Polish infantry. Polish attack have failed and they was not able to get the village. It was Bolshevik victory!

4. Summary/Podsumowanie

That was very hard scenario for Poles to win. There was a chance for that, but Polish commander made to many mistakes and therefore the game was lost. As I am able to take whole responsibility for the defeat, there are some serious issues with the rules, which we need to change during our games. First is the rule about casualties of weapons like MMGs. Their crew cannot be treat the same way as the field gun crew, they hadn't the same cover! The buildings  are indestructible, and you cannot hurt soldiers inside the building, they not even get suppressed! Thats are some of the reasons why I'm not happy with this rules. They looks to much abstract to myself, or they simple are not designed for the battles like this we just played. Next time we are going to try Bolt Action and then we would be able to answer all our questions.

Helgoland 1864

This week battle was another test game for the Naval Warfare rules created by Bill Gilchrist. This time we tryed the rules with unarmoured ships. The best  for this was battle of Helgoland fought on 9 May of 1864 between the navy of Denmark and the allied navies of Prussia and Austria during the Second War of Schleswig.

SCENARIO/SCENARIUSZ: Angus Konstam
SCENERY/SCENERIA: SESWC
MODELS/MODELE: Angus Konstam

1. Odre de batallie

DENMARK/DANIA:
Niels Juel - frigate - 42 guns (Tim Watson)
Jylland - frigate - 44 guns (Tim Watson)
Hejmdal - corvette - 16 guns (Angus Konstam)

AUSTRIA:
Schwarzenberg - frigate - 51 guns (Bartek Żynda)
Radetzky - frigate - 37 guns (Campbell Hardie)

PRUSSIA/PRUSY:
Preussischer Adler - paddle steamer - 4 guns (Ian Carter)
Blitz - gunboat - 3 guns (Donald Adamson)
Basilisk - gunboat - 3 guns (Donald Adamson)

2. The game/Gra.

The battle started when Austrians and Danes get in contact, but the Prussians were the first who fired in this game. Blitz tryed to hit the Niels Juel, but missed. From the Austrians the Radetzky was the first ship who get in contact with Danish navy. Danes answered with fire and then Schwarzenberg join the action too. For the long time those two squadrons fired each other. Finally both lines lost contact and separate for some time. Unfortunately for Austrians last gunshot from Hejmdal hit Schwarzenberg and Commodore Wilhelm von Tagetthoff get killed...
Now Danes decided to destroy Prussian ships. First with their fire they eliminated Blitz, who had stroke. After this Danish ships concentrated fire on Preussischer Adler. It broke off the Prussian ship. Now comes the time for Basilisk. She was rammed by Niels Juel and becouse of the damages she had stroke too. As in real battle the Prussian ships war to weak for big Danish ships.
When it was looked like Danes won the battle, Austrians returned to the action. Thier fire broke off Jylland and Hejmdal, but Niels Juel stayed in action. She answered with her fire and broke off Radetzky. But soon she received fire from Schwarzenberg and last Danish ship broke off the action. Unless like in real battle it Danes were those who withdraw from the battlefield. Victory for Austrians!

3. Summary/Podsumowanie.
We received different battle result than it happend in real battle. In our game it Danes had to withdraw, not Austrians, who had to look for shelter on the neutral waters. In both real and our battle Prussian ships were to weak for bigger ships and did not played the main role in the battle. The rules worked very smooth this time. New players pick up the rules very easy. There are still some issues, but they should be solved very easily.
Otrzymaliśmy inny rezultat w naszej grze w porównaniu do prawdziwej bitwy.
