Jesteśmy z powrotem na siedemnastowiecznych wodach i wojnie holendersko angielskiej z zasadami Tiller&Whipstaff. Podczas naszej ostatniej gry Campbell wspomniał, że przy następnej nie będzie mi już tak łatwo, a ja przyjąłem wyzwanie... Jego scenariusz był oparty na bitwie pod Plymouth (26.08.1652). Tego wieczora trochę się spóźniłem i co zastałem to moja eskadra wchodziła właśnie w angielską pułapkę, miło...

2. The game. Gra.

My ships as I mentioned entered the English trap. However, I could possible avoid it by changing the curse and tried to move parralel to the Campbell's ships, but I didn't. Soon both squadrons clashed in two separate boarding actions. In first one HMS Lion and Dreadnought fought with Zuiderhuis and in the second my remaining Dutch ships: White Oliphant and Amsterdam fought HMS Dunkirk and Royal Oak and unsuccessfully supporting HMS Welcome from Alasdair squadron. English quickly managed to force Zuiderhuis to surrender but in second figh Dutch repulsed English and captured HMS Dunkirk. Campbell rallied his ranks and attacked again, but then my dice stopped work for me. It started with White Oliphant, who fired at incomming English ships. I rolled low, what happened very badly to me and my ship surrendered! I was left with 1 fully strenght ship, one captured against 3 fully capable English ships, the decision was only one, abbadon the ships and burn them down!

Jak wspomniałem, moje okręty wchodziły w angielską pułapkę. Jednakże mogłem temu przeciwdziałać, zmieniając kurs na równoległy do okrętów Campbella, jednak tego nie uczyniłem. Wkrótce nasze eskadry złączyły się w dwóch walkach abordażowych. W pierwszej HMS Lion i Dreadnought walczyły z Zuiderhuis a w drugiej moje pozostałe holenderskie okręty: White Oliphant i Amsterdam przeciw HMS Dunkirk i Royal Oak, nieudanie wspomagane przez HMS Welcome z eskadry Alasdaira. Anglicy szybko opanowali Zuiderhuis ale w drugiej walce zostali odparci a HMS Dunkirk wpadł w moje łapy. Campbell uporządkował swoje szyki bardzo szybko i uderzył ponownie, ale właśnie wtedy kości obróciły się przeciw mnie. Zaczęło się od White Oliphant, który próbował ostrzelać nadchodzące okręty angielskie. Rzuciłem bardzo nisko, co skończyło się dla mnie źle, mój okręt się poddał! Pozostałem więc z jednym sprawnym okrętem i jednym zdobytym przeciw w pełni sprawnym okrętom angielskim. Decyzja była tylko jedna: opuścić okręty i je podpalić! 

Michael managed to avoid English trap, but he was chased by Alasdair ships. Most of them managed to keep the distance, but Elf Steden had less luck. She was hit by fire ship, what coused fire, but then she was boarded by HMS Cloug Tree. Michael managed to stop the fire, repulse the boarding action and move his ships away from the battle. This time English were victoriuos.

Michaelowi udało się ominąć angielską pułapkę, jednak był ścigany przez eskadrę Alasdaira. Większości udało się uciec, jednak mniej szczęścia miał Elf Steden. Został uderzony przez brander, co spowodowało pożar a następnie próbę abordażu podjęła załoga HMS Cloug Tree. Michaelowi udało się opanować pożar, odeprzeć abordaż i wycofać swoje okręty z pola bitwy. Tym razem Anglicy okazali się zwycięscy.

Elba 1652.

We stay with Anglo-Dutch War but with the first one for the change this time. Rules stay the same, Tiller&Whipstaff. The scenario was related to the Battle of Elba (6.09.1652). Once again British had to break the Dutch blockade...

Pozostajemy przy wojnie angielsko-holenderskiej, ale tym razem dla odmiany przy pierwszej. Zasady pozostają takie same, Tiller&Whipstaff. Scenariusz był oparty na bitwie pod Elbą (6.09.1652). Po raz kolejny Brytyjczycy musieli przełamać holenderską blokadę...

2. The game. Gra.

As I mentioned before the main task was for the English to break the Dutch blockade. For a few turns, the English Elba Squadron admiral was left alone and the relief forces would arrive on a lucky dice roll. Our plan was as quick as possible to attack the Elba Squadron, take it or destroy it and then, depending on the condition of our ships, face the relief forces or withdraw.

Jak już o tym wspomniałem, głównym zadaniem dla Anglików, było przerwanie holenderskiej blokady. Przez kilka pierwszych tur dowodzący eskadrą z Elby był pozostawiony samemu sobie, ponieważ odsiecz mogła przybyć dopiero gdy rzut kością na to pozwoli. Nasz plan zakładał szybkie starcie się z eskadrą Elby, opanowanie jej lub zniszczenie i wtedy w zależności na kondycje naszych okrętów starcie się z siłami odsieczy, lub wycofanie się z walki.

To our surprise, the relief forces appeared very quickly but were moving very slowly. In the meantime, John tried to sneak up between our squadrons, but one of the ships was stopped by Michael, who board it and finally force them to surrender. We got our first prize, it was HMS Wakefield!

Ku naszemu zaskoczeniu, siły odsieczy pojawiły się bardzo szybko, jednak poruszały się bardzo powoli. W międzyczasie, John, próbował się przekraść przez nasze eskadry, jale jeden z jego okrętów został zatrzymany przez Michaela, który dokonał abordażu i w walce przejął wrogi okręt. HMS Wakefield był nasz!

We decided to not resign from the second ship. We made a turn and moved against the incoming English. John tried with his second ship to board one of Michael's ships but accidentally broke his main mast and surrendered to him. We got two ęnemy ships now!

Zdecydowaliśmy się nie zrezygnować z drugiego okrętu. Wykonaliśmy zwrot i ruszyliśmy w kierunku przybywających Anglików. John próbował dokonać abordażu na jeden z okrętów Michaela, ale przypadkowo utracił główny maszt i musiał się poddać. Zdobyliśmy drugi okręt!

Unfortunately for us, English relief forces were incoming very quickly. I gave the order to burn the captured English ship, which Michael with some hesitance did. We were free, but the English started to fire at us, so we responded with fire. The hero of the day was a crew from Zuiderhuis. They gave two shots, first hitting HMS Ruby, which finished with a huge explosion and then with the second shot, she hit HMS Amity and reduce her sails dramatically. That stopped the English from chasing us. The battle was over with a great Dutch victory!

Niestety dla nas, angielska odsiecz zaczęła się do nas zbliżać bardzo mocno. Wydałem rozkaz spalenia zdobytych okrętów, co Michael z pewnym oporem wykonał. Mogliśmy swobodnie operować, jednak dostaliśmy się pod ostrzał z angielskich dział, więc odpowiedzieliśmy ogniem naszych dział. Bohaterem tego dnia była załoga Zuiderhuis. Oddali dwa strzały, jeden trafił HMS Ruby, co skończyło się potężną eksplozją a drugi trafił HMS Amity, co znacznie zredukowało jej ożaglowanie. To zatrzymało Anglików od ścigania nas. Bitwa zakończyła się wielkim zwycięstwem Holendrów!

Nevis 1667.

We were back on seas last week. It was time for Campbell's paper ship collection and Second Anglo-Duch War. For a game, we used the Tiller & Whipstaff rules. The scenario was loosely related to the Battle of Nevis, fought on the 20th of May 1667.

W zeszłym tygodniu zagościliśmy z powrotem na morzach. Był to czas by znów użyć kolekcji papierowych okrętów Campbella i drugiej wojny angielsko-holenderskiej. Do gry użyliśmy zasad Tiller & Whipstaff a gra była luźno związana z bitwą pod Nevis, stoczoną 20 maja 1667 roku.

2. The game. Gra.

The game's objective was to control the bay protected by English ships. Our plan was to move our fire ship against the line of Duch warships, spread them into single squadrons and then attack them in short range. Dutch players hadn't any idea about our gun battery on the island, so part of the plan was to get the enemy ships as close as possible to the shore and fire at them. What was our surprise, when Duch entered the table in single squadrons, not as the strong line...

Celem gry było to, kto będzie kontrolował zatokę, strzeżoną przez angielskie okręty. Nasz plan zakładał uderzenie naszym branderem w holenderską linię, co miało spowodować rozproszenie na pojedyncze eskadry i potem zaatakowanie ich na krótkim zasięgu. Holenderscy gracze nie mieli pojęcia o naszej baterii nadbrzeżnej, więc częścią planu, było zwabienie ich w zasięg ich dział i skuteczne ostrzelanie. Ku naszemu zaskoczeniu, Holendrzy wkroczyli na stół w rozproszonych eskadrach, a nie w jednej linii...

Dutch moved quicly against our ships and we moved parallel to them, trying to cross the Alisdair's squadron. Our Fire Ship leads the way. We opened our fire on the long-range, but it wasn't very successful. Finally, my Fire Ship reach its target. I managed to set it on fire and then it hit the enemy ship, which immediately started to burn. It was  Elf  Steden.

Holendrzy ruszyli szybko przeciw naszym okrętom, my z kolei ruszyliśmy równolegle do nich, starając się przeciąć kurs eskadry Alisdaira. Nas brander był na czele. Otworzyliśmy ogień na dalekim zasięgu, ale bez większych sukcesów. W końcu nasz brander osiągnął swój cel. Udało mi się go podpalić i wtedy on uderzył we wrogą jednostkę, która momentalnie zaczęła się palić. Był to Elf Steden.

Unfortunately, it was not the end of Alisdair's problems. Peter's squadron, who moved behind me managed to board the second of his ship. In fierce boarding action, the English captured the Dutch ship. Mike, whose squadron was on the far south side tried to recapture the lost ship, but firstly he get under the fire from our coastal battery and then he failed to ignite the fire on his fire ship. That allowed Peter to withdraw his ships with a valuable prize.

Na nieszczęście dla niego, to ie był koniec problemów Alisdaira. Eskadrze Petera, która poruszała się za moimi okrętami, udało się dopaść drugi z jego okrętów i po abordażu udało mu się go opanować. Mike, którego eskadra znajdowała się najdalej na południe, próbował odzyskać utraconą jednostkę, ale wpierw dostał się pod ogień naszej baterii nadbrzeżnej a potem nie udało mu się podpalić jego brandera. To ułatwiło Peterowi na wycofanie się z pola walki z cenną zdobyczą.

In the meantime, my ships fought against Ian's squadron, taking care, that burning Alistair's ship won't stop the fire. I tried to board a Dutch ship (one of Ian's), but they managed to repulse my attack. Finally, Elf Steden burn completely and I was able to withdraw as well, being sure that the bay is secured. Victory for the Royal Navy! 

W międzyczasie moje okręty walczyły przeciw eskadrze Iana, bacząc by ogień na okręcie Alisdaira nie został ugaszony. Próbowałem dokonać abordażu na jeden z okrętów Iana, ale ten został odparty. W końcu Elf Steden spłonął doszczętnie i mogłem w spokoju się wycofać, wiedząc, że zatoka jest bezpieczna. Zwycięstwo Royal Navy!

Burning Ships, Exploding Ships! Płonące okręty, wybuchające okręty!

Here we go again, a semi lockdown is back in Scotland. That stops us from gaming again and at work is getting hectic again. That is the reason, why there are no new posts on my blog. Today our last game, we managed to play, before we were forced to not visiting other houses. During the first lockdown, Campbell largely increased his 17th-century Anglo-Duch Wars, paper ships collection and we decided to use it alongside with the Tiller and Whipstaff rules.

No to mamy to znowu, ponowna kwaratanna w Szkocji. To znowu powstrzymuje nas przed graniem a w pracy znowu zrobiło się gorąco. To jest powód, że na moim blogu znowy zrobiło się cicho. Dzisiaj raport z ostatniej gry, jaką udało nam się rozegrać, zanim byliśmy zmuszeni do nieodwiedzania innych domostw. Podczas pierwszej kwarantanny, Campbell znacząco powiększył swoją kolekcję papierowych okrętów do wojen angielsko holenderskich z XVII wieku. Postanowiliśmy ich użyć wraz z zasadami Tiller and Whipstaff.

2. The game. Gra.

It was another game when I used my letter Y tactic. So far it was very effective and I was hoping that it will gave us the victory again. However, it has its weakness, as during that manoeuvre you spread your forces on two smaller squadrons and it is a possibility to be outgunned. The idea of that tactic is to force the opponent to get inside two arms, which both trying to put the letter T on the enemy, one of those arms will finally do it. Campbell knowing what is going to happen, he turns his ships, but then he met Peter's squadron ready to board the Duch ships.

Była to kolejna gra, w której uzyłem mojej taktyki postawienia litery Y. Jak do tej pory okazała się ona bardzo skuteczna i miałem nadzieję, że doprowadzi ona nas znów do zwycięstwa. Jednakże, ta taktyka ma swoje słabe strony, ponieważ wymaga podzielenia siły na mniejsze eskadry i istnieje prawdopodobieństwo, że strona przeciwna może użyć przewagi ogniowej względem jednej z naszych podzielonych eksadr. Ideą praewodnią tej taktyki jest zmuszenie przeciwnika do wpłynięcia pomiędzy dwa ramiona, które będą starały się postawić literę T względem przeciwnika i jednemu z ramion w końcu się to udaje. Campbell zdając sobie sprawę co się zaraz stanie, wykonał zwrot swoimi okrętami, ale tu natknął się na okręty Petera, gotowe do abordażu holenderskich okrętów.

So it started. First Oliphante boarded Royal Katherine and Oranje attacked Royal James. English managed to repulse the Dutch attack, but soon next ships joined the fight. Close range fire caused that the ships started to catch fire. Situation becoming very serious and dangerous for both sides. After some rounds of melees, the Royal Navy managed to broke off with a prize. They captured Oliphante. However Duch and French did not stop attacking English ships. Royal Charles gets under attack, but again point-blank fire caused a lot of fire on the ships.

Zaczęło się. Wpierw Oliphante dokonał abordażu na Royal Katherine a Oranje na Royal James. Anglikom udało się odeprzeć atak, ale wkrótce kolejne okręty dołączały do walki. Ostrzał na bliskim zasięgu powodował wzniecenie pożarów na okrętach. Sytuacja zaczęła stawać się poważna i niebezpieczna. Po kilku rundach walki wręcz, Anglikom udało się oderwać od nieprzyjaciela i przy tym porwać zdobycz. Tą zdobyczą był Oliphante. Jednakże Holendrzy i Francuzi nie przestali oatakować okrętów angielskich. Royal Charles został zaatakowany, lecz znów ostrzał na krótkicm zasięgu spowodował wybuch pożarów.

During that period, fire on a wooden ship. packed with explosives almost certainly equal an explosion. So we had it too. The first ship to explode was captured Oliphante. The next one was St. Philippe. The explosions caused more fire and soon most of the Duch fleet looked more like a bonfire than ships. We stopped the game at this point as the Royal Navy victory was more than clear.

W tym okresie, ogień na drewnianych okrętach, wypełnionych materiałami wybuchowymi, prawie zawsze prowadziła do eksplozji. Mieliśmy i my coś takiego. Jako pierwszy eksplodował zdobyty Oliphante, kolejny był St. Philippe. Eksplozje spowodowały jeszcze więcej pożarów i wkrótce holenderskie okręty bardziej przypominały wielkie ognisko, niż flotę. W tym momemncie skończyliśmy naszą grę, ponieważ zwycięstwo Royal Navy było jednoznaczne.
