Blood Red Skies: Allied bombing mission.

It had been quite some time since my last game with the Blood Red Skies rules. So I eagerly accepted Tim's idea to join in, especially since my brand-new bombers hadn't had the honour of appearing on the table. A quick action, and Tim created a scenario: the Allies, in this case a combined RAF and USAF bomber force, were to destroy two targets defended by a strong concentration of German fighters. The targets received support from the Flak, so the game promised to be truly interesting.

2. The Game.

As I mentioned at the beginning, there were two targets for our bombers. Tim and I decided that he would target one, and I would take the other with my American bombers. My fighters provided direct support to the American bombers, while Alasdair provided distant support for me. Tim's remaining Mosquitos, in turn, supported him. Three German squadrons moved against us: Andy against Tim, Michael against my fighters, and David against Alasdair.

Michael launched his attack on my fighters. I noticed his German fighters were flying in a single line, which was a mistake. I sent my best pilot forward while the less experienced pilots stayed back to support him. I broke through the German line with the first plane, then the second, and soon found myself on their tails. All I had to do then was open fire, and before long two German planes were down. First went a Focke-Wulf flown by the German ace Hans Drotemann, then a Messerschmitt Bf-109. The remaining German planes reached the bombers and even managed to outmanoeuvre one, but a burst from the American bombers' rear machine guns drove Michael's squadron from the battlefield. The Germans were beginning to lose.

What I did to Michael, Alasdair repeated against David. Although he was nearby and saw the German planes being easily shot down, he still fell into Alasdair's trap. This time, he escaped without loss, but my bombers rejoined the action and, with cannon fire from their turrets, drove David's squadron away. My bombers had a clear path to the target, but they were moving very slowly; that's because of the weight of the bombs they carried.

At the same time, Tim's Mosquitoes broke through Andy's blockade and advanced toward the second objective. Despite a valiant effort and poor shooting—Andy didn't roll a single six in the entire game—the German planes were forced to flee, losing one ME109. With both air defences gone, the Allies had a clear path to the objective. The anti-aircraft guns were the main problem, but we would deal with them later.

Tim's Mosquitos were the first to launch the attack. Both dropped their bombs but missed the target. The remaining Mosquitos moved in and destroyed it with cannons and machine guns.

There must have been something wrong with our bombers' bombsights, because the American bombers, when they finally reached their targets, also missed. My Spitfires had to finish the job. This time, however, anti-aircraft fire shot down one of my fighters, but the target was destroyed. The Germans lost both targets and three planes, including one ace, thus losing the entire game.

It was a successful debut for my American bombers: their machine guns were proven more effective than their bombs, and they returned to base unscathed!

Blood Red Skies: B-26B Marauder Squadron

After a difficult, time‑consuming project, I like to switch to something simpler and quicker. In such cases, I usually paint Soviet tanks. This time, however, I didn't have any tanks waiting in the wings, but some time ago, I bought a squadron of American B-26B Marauder bombers from Campbell.

I decided to use the scheme from the box, but without any extra markings—just the standard USAF insignia. The whole project took me two days, including drying time for the paints. You can see the result now. The aircraft are in 1/200 scale and, compared to my Hurricanes, they look truly impressive. Now the Allies have real bombers, and bombing missions will feel completely different.

My next project is the Khmelnytsky Uprising, which I'll be focusing on for the rest of my work. The Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth will be the first topic I cover!

Tripods & Triplanes: The End of a Year Game.

It was the last game of the year, so it didn’t need to be serious. We were in a scenario featuring Tripods and Triplanes, imagining a Martian invasion of Earth shortly after World War I. Our planet's defenders were Imperial German pilots, with some support from a British pilot. Their opponents were three tripods, which were assigned to destroy five targets.

2. The Game.

Tim and I played the roles of Martian creatures, while Alasdair, David, Jimmy, and Mike defended Earth. Tim commanded two smaller tripods, while I took charge of the massive Behemoth. On the opposing side, David, Jimmy, and Mike each controlled a single plane equipped with missiles or heavy guns, while Alasdair led two planes into battle.

The Earth pilots surged toward us with a boldness reminiscent of the legendary Uhlans, their spirits high as they charged forward with unwavering courage. However, the Martians skillfully manoeuvred through the Earth's attack line without taking damage and headed straight for their targets. The Earthlings then turned around and launched an assault from the rear, which made them vulnerable to preemptive black gas attacks that somewhat destabilised their offensive. Meanwhile, the Martians began to destroy the first targets.

The Earthlings changed their tactics and started attacking Tim's smaller tripods, leaving mine alone for a while. This concentrated attack proved effective, resulting in the destruction of one tripod that had been hit several times on its shields. Unfortunately, the Earthlings suffered a loss as one of their pilots, David, was shot down. Meanwhile, I remained undisturbed and destroyed the targets one by one.

Finally, only one target remained, and Tim and I set off to destroy it. A swarm of Earth planes swirled around us, but they weren't causing significant damage. Once the last target was destroyed, I could finally concentrate on shooting down enemy planes, which I must admit I wasn't very good at. I had my eye on one plane in particular: Goering's white aircraft.

I was a bit late for the game that evening, and when I arrived, Jimmy had already chosen it as his plane, so I decided to join the Martian forces instead. Jimmy naively thought I wouldn’t be able to shoot it down since it was my favourite plane. Nothing could be further from the truth; with my last shot, I successfully brought it down. At that moment, the game ended, resulting in a decisive victory for the creatures from the Red Planet.

As this is the final game of the year and the blog will be taking a break for the holiday season, I want to wish everyone a happy holiday! May you find just the right gifts under the tree and enjoy a relaxing time. Merry Christmas!

Blood Red Skies: Two quick games.

Before Claymore, we typically play quick games, since we often get interrupted by people asking questions related to the show. Blood Red Skies is ideal for this, as interruptions make it easy to pick up the game again. This time, we had just three players and played two quick games.

1. Game One.

In the first game, we had two squadrons of two aircraft. Tim played as the Luftwaffe, flying the Me-109F, while Alasdair piloted the Me-110C. I led both RAF squadrons: the Polish Hurricanes and the British Spitfires.

The Spitfires engaged the 109s while the Hurricanes attacked the Me-110s. Alasdair deployed his twin-engine fighters against my Hurricanes, while Tim divided his forces, sending one fighter to engage the Hurricanes and two others to target my Spitfires. A quick battle followed, during which the Spitfires outmanoeuvred the 109s, shot one down, and forced the remaining planes to retreat. Although the Hurricanes faced attacks from the 109s and Alasdair's fighters, they scattered but managed to regroup. With the Spitfires joining the fray, they successfully chased off Alasdair's 110s. The first encounter concluded with an RAF victory.

2. Game Two.

After completing the first game, we realised we still had time for a second brief match. This time, each side had only one squadron. Alasdair and Tim commanded the RAF forces with their Spitfires, while I led the Germans with my Me-109s.

The game was incredibly fast-paced and intense. Both teams fired at each other and quickly started collecting Boom Tokens, with each side reaching a total of three. The tension mounted as it became a race to see who would shoot first. The Spitfires took the initiative, securing another victory for the RAF. In the second game, not a single plane was shot down.
