We were back on seas last week. It was time for Campbell's paper ship collection and Second Anglo-Duch War. For a game, we used the Tiller & Whipstaff rules. The scenario was loosely related to the Battle of Nevis, fought on the 20th of May 1667.
W zeszłym tygodniu zagościliśmy z powrotem na morzach. Był to czas by znów użyć kolekcji papierowych okrętów Campbella i drugiej wojny angielsko-holenderskiej. Do gry użyliśmy zasad Tiller & Whipstaff a gra była luźno związana z bitwą pod Nevis, stoczoną 20 maja 1667 roku.

The game's objective was to control the bay protected by English ships. Our plan was to move our fire ship against the line of Duch warships, spread them into single squadrons and then attack them in short range. Dutch players hadn't any idea about our gun battery on the island, so part of the plan was to get the enemy ships as close as possible to the shore and fire at them. What was our surprise, when Duch entered the table in single squadrons, not as the strong line...
Celem gry było to, kto będzie kontrolował zatokę, strzeżoną przez angielskie okręty. Nasz plan zakładał uderzenie naszym branderem w holenderską linię, co miało spowodować rozproszenie na pojedyncze eskadry i potem zaatakowanie ich na krótkim zasięgu. Holenderscy gracze nie mieli pojęcia o naszej baterii nadbrzeżnej, więc częścią planu, było zwabienie ich w zasięg ich dział i skuteczne ostrzelanie. Ku naszemu zaskoczeniu, Holendrzy wkroczyli na stół w rozproszonych eskadrach, a nie w jednej linii...
Dutch moved quicly against our ships and we moved parallel to them, trying to cross the Alisdair's squadron. Our Fire Ship leads the way. We opened our fire on the long-range, but it wasn't very successful. Finally, my Fire Ship reach its target. I managed to set it on fire and then it hit the enemy ship, which immediately started to burn. It was Elf Steden.
Holendrzy ruszyli szybko przeciw naszym okrętom, my z kolei ruszyliśmy równolegle do nich, starając się przeciąć kurs eskadry Alisdaira. Nas brander był na czele. Otworzyliśmy ogień na dalekim zasięgu, ale bez większych sukcesów. W końcu nasz brander osiągnął swój cel. Udało mi się go podpalić i wtedy on uderzył we wrogą jednostkę, która momentalnie zaczęła się palić. Był to Elf Steden.
Unfortunately, it was not the end of Alisdair's problems. Peter's squadron, who moved behind me managed to board the second of his ship. In fierce boarding action, the English captured the Dutch ship. Mike, whose squadron was on the far south side tried to recapture the lost ship, but firstly he get under the fire from our coastal battery and then he failed to ignite the fire on his fire ship. That allowed Peter to withdraw his ships with a valuable prize.
Na nieszczęście dla niego, to ie był koniec problemów Alisdaira. Eskadrze Petera, która poruszała się za moimi okrętami, udało się dopaść drugi z jego okrętów i po abordażu udało mu się go opanować. Mike, którego eskadra znajdowała się najdalej na południe, próbował odzyskać utraconą jednostkę, ale wpierw dostał się pod ogień naszej baterii nadbrzeżnej a potem nie udało mu się podpalić jego brandera. To ułatwiło Peterowi na wycofanie się z pola walki z cenną zdobyczą.
In the meantime, my ships fought against Ian's squadron, taking care, that burning Alistair's ship won't stop the fire. I tried to board a Dutch ship (one of Ian's), but they managed to repulse my attack. Finally, Elf Steden burn completely and I was able to withdraw as well, being sure that the bay is secured. Victory for the Royal Navy!
W międzyczasie moje okręty walczyły przeciw eskadrze Iana, bacząc by ogień na okręcie Alisdaira nie został ugaszony. Próbowałem dokonać abordażu na jeden z okrętów Iana, ale ten został odparty. W końcu Elf Steden spłonął doszczętnie i mogłem w spokoju się wycofać, wiedząc, że zatoka jest bezpieczna. Zwycięstwo Royal Navy!
