Martinsville.

Few of us in our club are preparing for the AWI campaign, designed by Michael Schneider. This campaign will be played on two levels. The main army moves, supply etc. will be played on board game, invented and designed by Michael (he called it Le Petite Guerre). I had the opportunity to try this game as one of the first and during this test game we had many new ideas which actually changed slightly the game. The second level of that game is the battles, which are played in normal way, such is with toy soldiers and the table. For this we will use the Black Powder rules with some Michael's House rules (Mouse rules).
Do tych bitew będziemy używać zasad Black Powder z domowymi zasadami Michaela (Michael's House rules czyli Mouse rules).

Our battle was hypothetical situation from the board game. The American Militia was protecting the village on the American supply line and has been attacked by British brigade. According to the Michael's rules the players were able to bring into battle units from surrounding hexes around the battle hex up to three hexes. This was simulated on bringing the forces on D6, 2D6 and 3D6 turns (depends where the unit was placed on the map 1, 2 or 3 hexes away). More about the rules you can read on Michael's blog (the link is on the bottom of this relation).
Nasza bitwa była hipotetycznym starciem z planszówki. Amerykańska milicja strzegła wioski na amerykańskim szlaku zaopatrzeniowym i została zaatakowana przez brytyjską brygadę. Zgodnie z zasadami Michaela gracze mogli wprowadzić do bitwy oddziały znajdujące wokół heksa bitwy, do trzech otaczających go heksów.

American/Amerykanie:
Washington had concentrated a large amount of troops near Basking Ridge and is trying to threat the British right flank in New York state. Unfortunately he has just a militia Regiment in Martinsville to cover his supply lines. This is where the British will strike. Lucky for him Brigadier General Lee is with 2 brigades near the vicinity and can call for reinforcements. It diverts somehow capacity from the mayor battle scenario, but it is important that the main army is supplied. The Americans as a Defender can only break up the battle after 3-18 turns or after the light dragoons arrived, which ever is the longest, but in doing so will loose the battle. They must keep the village at all costs from the British.
Waszyngton skoncentrował duże siły w pobliżu Basking Ridge i próbuje zagrozić prawej flance wojsk brytyjskich w stanie Nowy Jork.

British/Brytyjczycy:
Washington had concentrated a large amount of troops near Basking Ridge and is trying to threat the British right flank in New York state. Unfortunately he has just a militia Regiment in Martinsville to cover his supply lines. This is where Cornwallis, always eager to please General Howe, sees the chance to cut this life line and leave Washingtons army seriously unsupplied. There is a Hessian Regiment near Bound Brook that could immediately attack the village, calling for reinforcements an unnamed 2nd rank Brigadier is called into the fray to help out with Cornwallis staple troops, but he has to forcemarch to get there in time with probably exhausted troops. Cornwallis also managed to call for a scouting Dragoon regiment. The British win the battle if they hold the Village against all American attacks. They can break up the battle after 1-6 turns, but will loosing the battle in doing so.

3. The game. Gra.

My plan was very simple. Knowed when the British troops will arrive on the battlefield, I was able to prepare the stronghold. The main problem was to keep British as far as possible away from the village. The best way to do it was diversion. I used my skirmish to do it. They attacked the British flank in the woods. After destroying the Jaegers in very long melee they retreat to the main forces.

The main British problem was the number of my troops. I managed to bring the first brigade in the first turn and the second brigade in the seventh. I had big advantage in number of soldiers. Now was the time for another diversion. I have marked the whole army attack and moved my units against the lonely British brigade. Michael had no choice and had to withdraw. This cost him more time and the village was still safe in American hands.
To kosztowało go więcej czasu a wioska cały czas pozostawała bezpieczna w amerykańskich rękach.

Finally the whole British army arrived. They bravely moved towards my troops. In our club we play diverted sequence of turns, such are initiative, shooting, ordered moves and hand to hand, which in our opinion much better simulate the 18th and 19th centuries warfare. So he had to came to me so I was able to disorganized his troops and he was unable to charge my troops. Then comes the 13th turn, but we had to finish our game, because the time for gaming was over. It finished with my victory, because I managed to destroy one British unit and hold the village.
W końcu cała armia brytyjska przybyła. Dzielnie ruszyli w kierunku moich oddziałów. W naszym klubie gramy odwróconą kolejność sekwencji gry, czyli inicjatywa, strzelanie, rozkazy i wtedy walkę wręcz, co w naszej opinii lepiej symuluje XVIII i XIX pole walki.

4. Summary. Podsumowanie.

The Mouse rules are working very well and transformation from the board game into table game get very smooth. However there was one issue we had to solve. Using the number of D6th to determine the turn, when they enter the table was to long for the club game, so we decided to swap it for D4. With the lower dice should take less time to bring all troops and to finish the game before the time for gaming is over.
Jednakże mieliśmy jeden problem do rozwiązania. Z niższą kością powinno zająć to mniej czasu by sprowadzić wszystkie oddziały i zakończyć grę przed dostępnym czasem.

It looks like the campaign rules are finally ready, now rest of the boys need to get into the test games and we are ready start!

  3. Also given more time maybe the ensuing fight would have been a near draw bloodbath. So under campaign conditions, as a British player, it would have been sensible to withdraw right away.
Bearing that in mind, we should allow players in LPG just once to "claim" for battle, then dice the surrounding circumstances out (before I have to carry lead), and IF that candidate wan't to retreat directly he HAS to take the LGP rules (i.e. one can claim only once).
