Commandwitz 1813.

We played another fictional Napoleonic-era game using the Black Powder rules. This time, we decided to play with 800 points. Having more points allowed us to build better and larger armies. This way, I could experiment with different troops and Michael could use his newly painted Prussians.

2. The game.

In our game, two small forests served as game objectives. We used the scenario scores from the Clash of the Eagles supplement. This time, I decided to apply the lessons learned from the previous game and concentrate on our forces instead of spreading them too thin. Tim, who commanded the Prussians and Austrian cavalry, chose not to disperse the dragoons and instead kept one large unit. I saw an opportunity to attack Tim's cavalry with our entire cavalry brigade in the first turn. As expected, my Uhlans struggled against the larger and heavier units. Despite several of my charges and being charged, my Uhlans held their ground. Eventually, when my troops were in a terrible state, I saw my chance.

At the same time, our infantry brigades were slowly advancing. The Austrian forces tried to do the same, but their complex command system made it difficult for them to synchronize their movements. As a result, the German brigade moved forward while the Hungarian forces remained behind. This allowed us to gain ground at the centre of the battlefield and start firing at the enemy positions. Meanwhile, the Prussians, wanting to minimize exposure, also held back and used their cannons and muskets to engage in a firefight with the Polish forces. Eventually, the Hungarian forces moved to attack us from the flank, but once again encountered problems with their commands, which allowed the Polish forces to defend against the manoeuvre. Finally, John decided to launch a bayonet attack.

John won 5 rounds of hand-to-hand combat, but the morale of the German battalion remained strong. It was an unprecedented sight for me. On the other hand, my last Uhlan regiment successfully attacked the disorganized dragoons and emerged victorious. Meanwhile, Prussian fusiliers took over our forest, but our accurate gun salvos and musket fire caused significant losses for their unit. It seemed likely that they would have to retreat from the forest in the next turn. This marked the end of the game with our victory. The Poles lost only one cannon battery, while the Austrians lost an infantry battalion and a cavalry regiment. I enjoyed the 800-point format and think it will be the standard for our Napoleonic period games moving forward.

  1. Maybe 100pts, if there are more players... 200pts per brigade (approx +-) seems to be an OK standard (2 brigades per player)... :)
