Firefly - the game.

Last time in our club we have tried something different. Colin brought the board game called "Firefly. The game." It is based on scifi drama, but it is not known to myself, but to be honest you dont need to know the story, you can still play the game. In that game you are captain of one of the spaceships. You are taking some jobs from few sources and some of them are  legal and some are illegal job, from which you  get the money: credits. Thanks the credits you can buy some stuff to upgrade your ship etc. We just played the basic rules and we really did not cared about the main game mission (I believe there are four main missions). However about the game are a lot of movies on YouTube. I have seen some of them, and I think they will be much better to tell you about the rules than myself. We find our game very enjoyable with a lot of fun. I took the risky illegal jobs to late and that was the reason why I took the second place. The game was won by Campbell, who actually took only illegal jobs. Well done!
Ostatnim razem w naszym klubie spróbowaliśmy coś zupełnie innego. Colin przyniósł planszówkę "Firefly. The game."

River Don 1943.

Finally, my blog is almost up to date. Today the game from a week ago played at Hugh Wilson's. The game was played on a magnificent table built by our host. This game was an episode during Soviet offensive Little Saturn, against German and Italian troops. However instead of the winter scenery, we had the beautiful summer one, but this is only detail. The scenery was just amazing!

2. The game. Gra.

Our troops were attacking across the river. Our troops were divided into three groups, attacking German and Italian positions on the other bank. The Bill's troops were stopped by German artillery fire but got no casualties. However, they have not managed to make any progress as well... Much more effective were Soviet Air Forces. Their attack eliminated one of the German Pz IIIs, who stopped the advance of Soviet T34s.

Second Soviet group was stopped by the road blockage and finally managed to reach the main river bank and support the naval troops. Their Churchill tanks chased away German Pz IIs, who fired at naval troops crossing the river.

The biggest progress made the Soviet Naval troops. As first, they reach the river and started to make their way on the second bank. In the water, they became an easy target for German Pz IIs. With their guns, they eliminated all NCOs and finally the arrival of the Soviet Churchills saved their lives. After this, the first Soviet troops finally crossed the river...

The special role had the Soviet River Tank (we have used the monitor rules created by Bill for the Vietnam War). All Enemy heavy artillery fire was concentrated on this boat. However, was not very accurate. She lost one of her three MMG and get stopped. The crew managed to repair the engine and soon she was back in action.

As we did not get any result and to not waste the great table for one game only, we decided to return and finish our game next time.

3. The Game. Gra.
The Lorraine Campaign is very popular in my club. However I never played it with Rapid Fire. I still have in my mind the quality of German troops in that campaign, most of them were very poor and this feature determinated my plan for the game. According to that, my main task was to clear the "Foret de Landres" and in the correct time evacuate 2 companies off the table before the end of the game. To fulfill this plan I divided German troops in two groups: first, under my command (they have to clear the forrest) and the second, under Richard's (they were ordered to clear Mont Bonvillers, marking the attack on Mairy and on my command withdraw all their troops off the table). In that way I had a big chances to achieve 2 objectives and secure the draw. The clearing of Mairy was from the beggining of the game consider as "Mission Imposible", so I did not even thinking about realising that plan. However, I had a hope, that my opponents would consider that attack, as it would be exactly what I normally do, but not this time. Surprise!
Niespodzianka!

My attack on the forest was determinated by the time of the day. Till the end of turn 4 or 5 my tanks moved with reduced speed, becouse of the darkness. Finally when the daylight came I get under the fire from the American howitzers. It destroyed one of my Panthers and becouse of the failed morale test my HQ had to withdraw to the suburbs of Mont Bonvilliers. Rest of my Kampfgruppe continued the attack. They had to faced the flank attack from the II/359 and from the back the III/359. My tanks had destroyed all Shermans, however the Stuarts were the couse of the serious problems of my infantry. They managed to destroy my MMG Company, Wirlbewind and one of the halftrucks. I had to send against them one of my Panthers, to finally stop them. This issue did not stopped my main forces to clear the forest of the remaining American forces, and at the end of turn 9, the forest was cleared (objectives gained).

Richard had very boring task. For the most of the game he had to hold the positions and waiting for the withdraw order. I was really sorry for him, but this was the one of the main conditions of not lost the game. Few times I had to really stop him tried crossing the marked line. However, Richard managed to clear the Mont Bonvilliers, destroyed the elements of the III/359 attacking him from the flank and stopped the marching of the I/358 attacking from the Mairy. At the turn 10th he received the order to withdraw and in that way he fulfill his task.
Kilka razy musiałem go powstrzymywać przed przekraczaniem wyznaczonej mu linii. Po mimo tego Richardowi udało się znisczyć elementy III/359 atakujące go od flanki i zatrzymać marsz atakującej go od strony Mairy I/358. W turze 10. otrzymał w końcu rozkaz do odwrotu i zadanie to wykonał.

During the game we managed to achieved only two objectives, so the game finished with the draw. Unlike in real battle we did not suffered disaster like the Germans did on the 8th of September 1944, so we could called it a winning draw!

Border Wars. Wojny pograniczne.

My blog was off for some time. That's the problem with the end of the Winter. I just was to quite lazy and sleepy, to write anything. The painting job has slow down, but now it's time to stop it and be back in control again. Now I need to do some updates to the blog. First the game from two weeks ago. It was try of new set from Jim Conquer's. The game was played at Hugh Wilson's house.
Mój blog był wyłączony przez jakiś czas. To zwykły problem z końcem zimy.

SCENARIO/SCENARIUSZ: Jim Conquer
GAME UMPIRING/PROWADZENIE GRY: Jim Conquer
SCENERY/SCENERIA: Donald Adamson, Hugh Wilson
MODELS&FIGURES/ MODELE I FIGURKI: Jim Conquer.

Scotland and England were frequently at war during  from the late 13th century to the beginning of the 17th century.  During these wars, the livelihood of the people on the borders was devastated by the contending armies. Even when the countries were not at war, tension remained high, and royal authority in either kingdom was often weak. The uncertainty of existence meant that communities or people kindred to each other would seek security through their own strength and cunning, and improve their livelihoods at their nominal enemies' expense. Loyalty to a feeble or distant monarch and reliance on the effectiveness of the law usually made people a target for depredations rather than conferring any security. In that circumstances born the group of people called the Border Reivers. The reivers were both English and Scottish and raided both sides of the border impartially, so long as the people they raided had no powerful protectors. Great subject for wargaming and its very popular in UK.

Jim Conquer created very simple set of rules describing that period of time, but in my opinion it could be played in every period till the end of age of gunpowder and before the era of machine guns. Every player have a group of figures included the Laird (warlord - only one), Heidmen (well armoured - max 3), Reivers (light armoured) and Bondsmen (the Levies). Every figure have their own stats for their skill such as armour strenghts, shooting skills combat ratings etc. Every skill have the rating from 1 (low) to 6 (high). The system is IGoYouGo. Rest of the set describes the rules for hand to hand combat, shooting, ambushes etc. The system structure allow us to lead the army of no more then 10 men, that is due to the different abilities of our figures. The system is very easy to learn. Another good set from Jim. I hope that he is going to publish it.

In our game our team (Tim Watson, Hugh Wilson and myself) had to conquer the enemies castle (Donald Adamson, Colin Jack and Campbell Hardie). This time our team managed to open the gate but the castle remain in enemies hands. So this time we had been defeated. Till the next time!
W naszej grze nasz zespół (Tim Watson, Hugh Wilson i ja) mieliśmy za zadanie zdobyć wrogi zamek (Donald Adamson, Colin Jack i Campbell Hardie).

Message from Hugh Wilson.

A big Thankyou from Hugh re Combat Stress.

I'm not a bloggy guy so I've asked Angus, Bill, Bart and Dave if they'd post this notice on theirs.

As many of you know, a friend of many and a long time member of SESWC, Iain Holt, very sadly and suddenly died last November.

A very close friend of Iain's, Jim Duncan, is dealing with sorting and selling Iain's wargame collection with the proceeds being donated to Iain's charity of choice, Combat Stress.

I volunteered to help Jim with this task and have been selling things on his/Iain's/Combat Stress' behalf since the end of November.

I've sold just over £3000 worth so far (with more in the pipeline), though I've not passed this on to Jim yet (maybe I should go a long holiday).

As I've been helped  in this by a number of people, I think it's time to say 'Thanks' them.

A lot of the sales have been to the guys who come up here every second Thursday for our regular game, these include Angus Konstam, Colin Jack, Billy Gilchrist, Dave O'Brien, Bart Zynda, Campbell Hardie, Tim Watson and Ray Neal amongst others.
I've also been helped by Ged in Leuchers.  I approached him at Christmas when they have their club's big game and he very kindly let me set up a 'shop' which did very well.
Simon from Solway miniatures let me do a similar thing at the Albanich show.

In addition to the above I'd like to thank my wife very much for putting up with a large part of  Iain's collection taking up our front room for nearly four months.
A special thanks to Colin Jack for transporting me as I don't drive.
To Angus, Bill, Bart and Dave O'Brien for posting this on their blogs.
To Mike Headden, Colin Smith and Charles Grant.
To Iain's parents for a large contribution to the charity.
The biggest thanks are due to Jim Duncan for kicking it all off, sorting through Iain's collection and the selling he's done.
Lastly to all the others who have generously bought items...(I've also had a couple of donations from guys at Leuchers and Albanich who didn't actually buy anything, or who gave me more than I asked for).

If anyone reading this is interested in finding out more, they can contact me on     greenhouse_edin@hotmail.com

Myself, Jim and a few others will be selling more at Falkirk and Claymore so you can see us there.

I don't know when Jim will finalise the cash, but hopefully by then we will all have raised quite a bit of money for Combat Stress.

All the best and thanks again to everyone.

Hugh

Mediatization of the Holy Roman Empire. Mediatyzacja Świętego Imperium Rzymskiego.

I believe that I have placed my opinion very clearly. There is no hope for the divided Reich! All those princes, electors and rest of this scum who don't believe in United Reich, should be asked a question: Who pays you? Who do you serve? Is it France? Is it Russia or is it Sweden? I don't know my dear soldiers, but only one I know that, we and our Allies, who thinks like us, should give them the hard lesson. The lesson they never forget! By this lesson their thoughts will be cleared, and then they will see the world with our eyes. They will see the future of our great Nation! Remember boys, we don't fight to conquer, we fight for the brighter future for our sons and grandsons. Long live the Great Reich, Long live our great Nation! Ein Volk und Ein Reich!
From the Frederick the 2nd speach to his soldier before marching out.

I know the good place for beer guys.
Soldier of the 2nd Hessian Division to his comrades.

Mediatization, it was the process in 18th and 19th centuries when bigger German states took control over the smallest. It was the beginning of united Germany and the second Reich. This was processed more or less without great wars or etc. We decided to check what would happend if some states would be opposed to this and decided to defend their right. That was subject for two days gaming with my new wargame group.

The big game was processed by test game in our club. During this game we had to check some rules prepared by Bill Gilchrist for this game. For this test we played a game with Donald Adamson, Campbell Hardie and visiting our club Richard against me and Bill. We used figures from Bill's collection. The game gave us the answers for few questions and were prepared for the big game. This test game was won by Bill and myself.
W teście zagrali Donald Adamson, Campbell Hardie i wizytujący nasz klub Richard przeciwko Billowi i mnie. Użyliśmy do gry figurek z kolekcji Billa. Gra dała nam odpowiedzi na kilka pytań i dzięki temu byliśmy przygotowani do naszej wielkiej gry. Gra testowa została wygrana przeze mnie i Billa.

The big game was played on the 24' x 8' table with 16 players all together. There were three sides: the antimediatization forces, the promediatization and the emperor with his support. On the beggining of the game two states from the Pros joined the emperror but soon the emperor joined the Antis and in this way to the end of the day two opposite sides remained: Antis and Proses. During the midday during the Great Voting (sides had the possibility of changing their sides) the leader of Antis abbadonned his side and joined the Proses but later on he came back to his original forces. During this day none of the sides took the victory.
Na początku gry dwa kraje Popierające dołączyły do cesarza, jednak ten wkrótce sam dołączył do przeciwników i do końca dnia pozostały dwie walczące strony: Przeciwników i Popierających. W środku dnia przywódca Przeciwników dołączył do Popierających, jednak w późniejszym czasie powrócił do swoich oryginalnych sił.

My forces (Hesse) had problems from the beggining of the game. My initial forces (1 brigade) had to face two enemies. The problem was with my another two brigades. Becouse of my very bad throws for command I cannot bring them on the battlefield. Despite this problems my first brigade fouth very bravely. But the situation of my army was very critical. Specially the attack from the left flank by Prince of Starhemberg was very destructive for my troops. Finally I managed to bring my missing brigades and form the defending lines, but at the end of  the day my loses was more then whole brigade.

Day 1:
Dzień 1.:

Promediatization: Elector of Hesse (CoC), Prince of Thurn and Taxis, Count of Wartenberg-Roth, Count von Leyen, Prince Bishop of Augsburg, Bishop of Wurtzberg.
Antimediatization: Duke of Arenberg (CoC), Prince of Fugger Baberhausen, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, Prince of Starhemberg, Count Aspremont Lynden, Bishop of Trent,
Emperor: Imperial Army, Prince of Galatia.

turn 1: Count Aspremont Lynden and Count of Wartenberg-Roth changed their sides.
turn 4: Count von Leyen changed side, Count of Wartenberg-Roth and Bishop of Wurtzberg joined the Emperor.
turn 5: Count von Leyen and Prince of Fugger Baberhausen changed their sides.

the Great Voting:

Promediatization: Duke of Arenberg (CoC), Elector of Hesse, Prince of Thurn and Taxis, Bishop of Trent, Bishop of Wurtzberg, Count of Wartenberg-Roth, Prince Bishop of Augsburg
Antimediatization:  Count von Leyen (CoC), Prince of Fugger Baberhausen, Duke of Holstein-Gottorp, Prince of Starhemberg, Count Aspremont Lynden,
Emperor: Imperial Army, Prince of Galatia.

turn 7: Duke of Arenberg changed his side and became the CoC, the Elector of Hasse became the CoC for Proses.
turn 10: Prince of Fugger Baberhausen changed sides.

During the second day, the Emperor have declared his neutrality. All parts has been devided on two sides, depends on which side of the table they were. I stayed with the Pros. During the second day the sides changes has been prohibited, only Emperor was able to chose the side and actually it wasn't him who choose, that's becouse he has been attacked by one of the Proses. Finaly just before the end of the game the Emperor has been captured and the Pro side was declared a winner. My situation at the beggining of the second day was very bad. I had only two brigades (I have  bought some reinforcements) and my opponents have three brigades each. My worst enemy from the previous day, the Prince of Starhemberg became my Ally, so  I decided to fight against the Duke of Arenberg. Unfortunely I was outnumbered and Duke after furious battle defeated my forces, so I personally lost the battle, but my side won it. So I can declare win and loss together.
