To the Strongests: Gauls vs Rome; Galowie vs Rzym.

Last Thursday we had To the Strongests game: Gauls against Rome. That system reactivated many of the Ancient collections in our club and is getting more and more popular. First because of its simplicity, second because of its unusual engine. As maybe some of you know, that set of rules is not using dice but playing cards instead (from A to 10). I will definitely wrote about this system something in the future. So let move to the game.
W ostatni czwartek mieliśmy grę z zasadami To the Strongests: Galowie przeciw Rzym.

2. The game. Gra.

Our game from the beginning divided into two separate clashes. First was my cavalry against Gaul cavalry supported by some foot warriors and the second where fought the main forces. I will started from my side this time. I was outnumbered by the Gauls 4 to 3 but the frontal attack was not a very good idea this time. I thought that the quick attack will allow me to break that flank and then support our infantry in the centre. I miscalculated that this time... The Gaul cavalry received support from foot warriors and my situation was very critical. I managed to destroy one unit of the enemy, but soon all my units were vanished. That was just the beginning of the incoming disaster.

In the centre both main forces was slowly marched against each other. The fight begins and was very fierce. Units get broken one after another and soon both sides were close to lost its morale. Romans were left with one morale token against three of Gauls. That means that whoever lost a unit will lost a game. Michael's Gauls charged Campbell's veteran Romans. Each sides received a hit, but Romans did not saved it and they lost a unit. The battle was won by the Gauls. It was good game and I think that soon some new Ancient armies will rise in our club and that means more Ancient battles in the future!
W centrum główne siły powoli zbliżały się do siebie. Rozpoczęła się bardzo zażarta walka. Oddziały były niszczone jeden po drugim i wkrótce obie strony zbliżyły się do limitu by stracić swoje morale. Rzymianie zostali z jednym żetonem morale a Galowie z trzema.

2. The game. Gra.

Angus prepared the historical scenario, however I changed the Scots for Poles (to fit it with my figures). We played the Attack & Defence Scenario with Allied as the defenders. In the patrol phase I played against Peter and managed to outmaneuvered him on the table, so we took good positions for our jump-off points. The game begins.
Angus przygotował scenariusz, jednak ja zamieniłem Szkotów na Polaków (by bardziej to pasowało do moich figurek).

Germans started the game, however they can deploy their forces only on the quarter of the table, whereas our troops started on the half. Peter had only one jump off point, he can use and had to push his forces through that place. Just after that my Poles arrived on the table, they catch up Germans on the open field and easily massacred one of their squads. Peter took the lesson and hide his troops behind the hedges. We started shoot each other but I had two jump off points to use and soon my other units arrived on the table and I was able to shoot at him from two positions which closed his troops on the small square. Finally the tanks arrived. One Panzer IV for Peter and platoon of Shermans for myself. The tank fight begins, however despite of my fire advantage, I was not able to quickly destroy the German tank. Finally I killed his driver and produced so many shocks on his crew, that they abandoned the German tank, my tanks had no scratch at all. When I eliminated the German tank, my Shermans supported Infantry and Peter started to loose his morale points...
Peter miał do dyspozycji jedynie jeden punkt jump-off i musiał wszystkie swoje oddziały wprowadzać właśnie przez ten punkt. Rozpoczęliśmy wzajemny ostrzał jednak ja miałem do dyspozycji dwa jump-offy, mogłem go ostrzeliwać z dwóch miejsc i wkrótce zamknąłem jego oddziały w małym kwadracie. W końcu na pole bitwy przybyły czołgi. Jeden Panzer IV Petera i mój pluton Shermanów.

The game had its decisive point on the other side of the table, where Campbell's Germans attacked Angus's British. Campbell decided to made a frontal attack on British positions supported with his tanks. That Eastern front tactic was not very accurate among the Normandy hedges. British had good defending positions and simple decimated German troops. German tanks were destroyed either by 6pdr or by PIAT team. Finally Campbell in his style decided to ram the British gun, he managed to destroy the gun, but the German Infantry morale drop to 0 and Germans run away. that finished the game with British/Polish victory.

2. The game. Gra.

Alan started the game with all of his forces deployed on the table and myself taking the first turn. He wisely put a lot of his tanks in ambush fire, what brought a serious surprise for my troops. In the first turn I lost all of my tanks! But that was all, what Germans were able to do. I brought my Air Officer who managed to call for a plane in every turn, which pinned a lot of Alan's units. My infantry slowly closed the encirclement and planes, who  were supported by mortars stopped Alan from any movements. Finally he managed to move his tank and destroy my Air Officer, but then arrived my timed air support and that was it... The game was over with a great Soviet victory.

General d'Armee: 7YW. General d'Armee: Wojna siedmioletnia.

Last Thursday's game was Angus's idea. He was curious if the General d'Armee rules, mainly written for Napoleonic period, would work with Seven Years War. He changes the rules a little, so the attack columns were not allowed etc. Just to fit the game into period.
Nasza ostatnia czwartkowa gra to pomysł Angusa. Tak by wpasować grę w rozgrywany okres.

2. The game. Gra.

I have to admit to something. I was initially going to play French, who have to move the wagon trail to the besieged town. It was moving 9'' on the roads only and the troops in the town could be activated only, when the wagon move over the half of the table. Tough conditions, but when we started the game, unexpectedly as a result of the "draw", the second Hesse brigade appear just between me and the town I started moun that the French are unable to win that game. Michael S. said that it is not the true and offer to change the sides which was accepted. So the game started with 2 Hesse brigade on the opposite corners of the table and the French on the other corners, but only one was allowed to move...
Muszę się do czegoś na początku przyznać. Początkowo miałem grać Francuzami, którzy mieli doprowadzić wozy do oblężonego miasta.

French forces managed to very quickly moved to the centre of the table and created the screen from the Infantry to protect the wagons. I was slowly moving my forces towards Michael's troops. When all troops reached the firing distances we started to shoot each other. From my first game I remembered that the charge is not good option, especially when the opponent is still full strength, so I kept the distance and shoot, shoot and shoot the French. When my guns joined the action it was even more successful. However still the French cavalry was an issue for me. Especially when my cavalry was still off table. Happily I managed to create the square and Cavalry moved somewhere else. In the meantime the shooting continued and finally gave me some results as one of the French battalions get broke.
W międzyczasie wzajemny ostrzał trwał i ostatecznie przyniósł on mi jakieś rezultaty. Jeden z francuskich batalionów został zniszczony.

On the other side Michael Scott happily stopped French advantage, but did not prevent wagons to move half way, so the forces in the town could be activated. However the activations rolls were not amazing and only one cavalry regiment managed to move out the town. But it was too late for further game as the time was over. The game finished with a draw. It worth mention that Michael S. just for fun and for test decided to charge with the Cavalry on the battalion square. It happily finished with cavalry bounced back, but we know for the future - DO NOT DO IT AGAIN. The game itself showed, that the rules could work with the period, but it is definitely written for the Napoleonic period. I will write more about the rules, but I need to read them first. They really deserve a good review, which I will promise do.

What a Tanker! - testing the eastern front tanks; testy czołgów z frontu wschodniego.

Two weeks ago I asked Jack and Derek if they would be happy to test the What a Tanker for another time. We had few games with that rules in the club and during the last Deep Fried Lard, but it always was with the western front tanks, but never with the eastern. I was quite interested how the rules would be working with the Soviet tanks. I prepared the scenario for the game with a use of some of my models and we tested it last Thursday in our club.
Przygotowałem scenariusz z użyciem kilku z moich czołgów i przetestowaliśmy je w ostatni czwartek w naszym klubie.

2. The game. Gra.

In our game everyone had to roll for the tank and also the corner of the table it will start the game. It finished with two friendly and one enemy tank started every edge of the table. I started with the Panther tank and I moved against the weakest tank, which was the T-34/76. I managed to surprise it from the back and soon we had the first victim. To not finish the game to quickly I gave Soviet one extra tank so it could continuous.
By nie kończyć gry zbyt szybko dałem Sowietom jeden dodatkowy czołg, by gra mogła być dalej kontynuowana.

Since that moment game divided into two small games: 2 Pz IV against IS-2 and T-34/85s against Panther. In first fight the mighty Soviet tank but not without some issues managed to finally destroy two German tanks and moved to support two other Soviet tanks, who fought against my tank. Here I used the small forest and tried to outmaneuvered the enemy tanks, but when the third tank arrived I was surrounded and finally destroyed.
Tutaj użyłem małego lasku, by wymanewrować wrogie czołgi, jednak kiedy trzeci czołg przybył zostałem okrążony i ostatecznie zniszczony.

The game proved once again, that good game not always need to be overcomplicated one. I did not read the rules, as they still are under construction but I have a small issue. It should be the minimum range the tanks would be able to shoot each other, in other way we had silly situations like my tank against T-34/76 or T-34/85 against my tank. Anyway it was good game I we thinking about the early war tanks and their statistics. I think that soon we can play a Blitzkrieg version of What a Tanker!
