Songs of Drums and Tomahawks.

Last Thursday in our club, we had a little test game of the newly system for us called Songs of Drums and Tomahawks. Bill tried it once and decided to bring it to us. I was very curious of that system, first because I like to play that period (which it covers), secondly it always good to have some alternative for other systems (mainly for Muskets and Tomahawks).
W ostatni czwartek w naszym klubie mieliśmy małą grę testową nowego dla nas systemu zwanego Songs of Drums and Tomahawks. Bill spróbował go juz raz i postanowił zapoznać nas z nim.

To keep the test simple, everything was simplified. The two groups of Indians (myself) attacked group of Colonists (Campbell Hardie) supported by Rangers (Bill Gilchrist) across the river. During this game we tried everything, shooting on long distance, hand to hand etc. Finally Indians get pushed back and had to withdraw. That's the game in very brief description of the game. That wasn't the point. The point was set o rules.

So far or that period we had two set of rules: Muskets and Tomahawks and Black Powder. As the second one is better for big battles we mainly for skirmish games used the first one. And that the area where Songs arrived. I have read about this system many times and finally had the opportunity to try it. After the first game I can said I like it. Have a very good potential. It is simple and fast but not boring. As there was some issues I had with M&T, mainly activations, when at the very big games it get bored, specially when you have to wait all cards deck to finally activate your unit (I'm not generally enthusiast of that way of activations), here it goes to the something I like much more: turns. Every unit or figure (it depends of the specific of the unit, orders etc.), had to take the test and then if it pass can execute the given order (move, shot etc.). When we fight (both shooting and melee) we had to beat the value of the enemy figure. It is usually sum of weapons and figure characteristics plus dice roll. The difference gives us the result of fight. Very simple. Rest is in the same way.

However the game have its minuses as well. I don't know, maybe it was caused by tiredness after hard week at work, but in my opinion the way the value of figure during the fight is the most confusing. As it put action very often to the single figure,  it always had to check the reference sheet. Especially when our unit has many individuals, it is really annoying and it is really easy to get lost. Maybe I'm wrong, but that are my feelings about it.

Despite the minuses, the game is very enjoyable. I don't think that it will beat M&T in our games, however it will be some kind of alternative. For sure we need to try more games and maybe finally I will paint some Indians for myself.

Yes, last Thursday in our club we had a continuation of our previous game. However this time we decided to use for the first time our club's terrain, a castle! We bought it a year ago on Claymore, with the idea of using it for Bolt Action game (possibly we finally do it in future, so no detail of the game yet). Since that time, the castle left unused in our clubs shed. When we finished our last game, I had an idea of using that castle during our another game with brave King's Musketeers, so we did.

2. Introduction. Wprowadzenie.

On their way back to Paris, Rochefort needed to stop off at a small chateau. Capt. Treville has agreed that this would be the best and possibly last opportunity to rescue Agnes. Once within the shadow of Paris the Cardinal's influence would be to great. Getting in proved to be easy, but then the alarm was sounded. With mother and child in tow the only way out was through the front door!
W drodze powrotnej do Paryża, Rochefort musiał zatrzymać się w małym zamku. Kpt.

3. Cast. Obsada.

4. The game. Gra.

As soon the Heroes appear, my men with muskets opened the fire. However this time everything was as it usually is in adventure movies. They shoot a lot, but they was unable to hit... So I send one men with a sword and one pikeman to stop Heroes advantage.

The men with the sword died as the first, but the pikeman proved to be harder opponent. Against him fought D'Artagnan together with Aramis. Porthos moved forward and took care about my men with muskets and eliminated them one after another. During this time Athos together with Agnes made their way to the castle yard.
Atos wraz z Agnes ruszyli w kierunku zamkowego dziedzińca.

On the castle yard, Athos and Agnes's way was crossed by two other pikemen. Just behind them appear the Sergeant and Rochefort. However in the same time D'Artagnan and Aramis defeated the pikeman on the walls and joined the fight with very effective jump (Aramis get temporary stun) and from the back attacked the bad guys. The fight started and when Porthos joined the fight too, soon all pikemen, Sergeant and Rochefort were down. The way to the front door was opened!

When our Heroes fought in the castle, Capt. Treville men attacked from the village Jussac's men. They forced Jussac to hide in the village and then Musketeers moved to the castle. Foolishly, they forgot about Jussac, who now attacked them from behind. Finally only Capt. Treville left alive against all Jussac's men...
Kiedy nasi Bohaterowie walczyli w zamku, Kpt. Ostatecznie jedynie Kpt. Treville pozostał przy życiu, przeciw ludziom Jussaca...

Exactly in that moment our Heroes moved through the gate. They killed Lussac's men and crossed the bridge over the moat. They were almost free, when unexpectedly Jussac grabbed Agnes and started to move back to the castle. However at this moment, because of the Cardinal's men casualties they had to take the morale test and they failed, so Jussac push Agnes in the direction of Musketeers and shut the castle gate. Game finished as it should, the righteous men where victorious again. To the next episode!
Do zobaczenia w następnym odcinku!

5. Summary. Podsumowanie.

Once again the 7TV rules worked very well and gave us the exciting game, when till the last minute both sides were possible to win. We all agreed that another game will be played somewhere around Christmas. So till the next time.

Fornovo 1495

In this week's Thursday our club will be changed into polling station, so our gaming night was moved for Tuesday instead. As I did not not have any game planned for that night I have joined to the game organised by Michael. He was desperate to try his new toys from Italian Wars and he choose the Battle of Fornovo, fought 6th of July 1495 and as Jack supported Michael with his figures we were able to play the full size battle on very tiny table (6'x4'). That was to speed up the game and not waste time for unnecessary maneuvering. For the game we used Pike and Shotte rules.
Do gry użyliśmy zasad Pike and Shotte.

2. The game. Gra.

According to our (French) plan, we were going to push our whole infantry to block the river crossings (all fords and the bridge) and with our cavalry push back the Italian cavalry, which was on our bank. Thanks those actions we were expected that we will create the safe way for our loot. We both agreed that this is the simlest plan and it should worked well, however as lerned with the past games, the reality is not always fit the plans...

Game started with my artillery bombardment, however this time not very accurate. Our infantry managed to take its positions on the river bank very quickly, but cavalry did not managed to take their positions and to be honest gets disordered because of my actions. The price was quite huge I had to paid for that mistake. First the Italian cavalry (Stradioti and Men-At-Arms) charged on my guns from the flank. Surprisingly they had been pushed back and when my guns were ready to fire, one of the guns explodes (effect of triple ones on my dice)...

That explosion causes a lot of chaos between my artillery. Italian cavalrymen just destroyed one gun after another. Finally when all guns have been lost, Italians got my unprepared Man-At-Arms. Smashed them and then withdraw to regroup. That was only temporary succes of the Italians. Destroying my Man-At-Arms created free way for the charge of our Gendarmes. I used that opportunity and soon Italian cavalry was pushed off the table. That action created free way to Paris for our wagons with loot and the king!

Worth mentioning is that our infantry totally blocked Italian action from the other bank of the river. By blocking the crossings, they prevent the main Italian forces to support their cavalry. We managed to get the much better result than the French got in real battle. It was very good game with a lot of very nice figures.
